It seems impossible that itâs only four oâclock. I donât want to go to headquarters and leave Hailey alone, so Maria and I sit down at my kitchen table to talk about what we heard from Amberâs sister earlier and what to do next.
âPlaying poker,â Maria says. âDo you suppose heâs addicted to gambling online? Maybe thatâs where some of their financial problems come from.â
âOr maybe heâs trying to beat the odds to take the pressure off their money situation. Either way, weâre going to have to ask him.â
We look at each other. We donât want to wait around, but we canât both go. âIâd like to volunteer to talk to him, but something tells me heâd be more willing to talk to you,â she says. âI can stay here and call you if I need you.â
I donât want to ask my deputy to babysit, but I feel the pressure of investigating Amberâs murder, and Iâm not comfortable leaving Hailey alone. I want to go talk to Mike, and the only other solution I can think of is to take Hailey with me. Somehow, I canât picture that being a possibility. But then it strikes me that this is exactly the thing that makes her think people are treating her like a child. If she were an upset adult, I would go do what I needed to do and leave a note.
âWe are both going,â I say. And I tell Maria my thinking.
I write a note to Hailey that says: âGone to question someone in the case. Back in an hour. Call me if you need me.â But I do leave a babysitter of sorts. I decide to leave Dusty. I add to the note: âPlease donât let Dusty out. He tends to wander.â
Outside, Maria says, âIâm serious. I think itâs best if you talk to him alone. Heâs a guy who might be finding out his wife was having an affair. Heâs not going to want to admit it in front of me.â She says sheâs going back to the office.
âWait â¦â I say. âI have an idea. Tell me if you think itâs a bad idea. Suppose Hailey comes to your self-defense class tonight?â
She nods. âThat could work. If sheâs OK with it.â
âI think she would be.â
âYou know where it is, and it starts at six-thirty. Bring her.â
After what happened this afternoon, it seems like days since I talked to Amberâs sister, DeeDee, instead of this morning. She answers the door and when she sees me she flinches.
âI need to have a talk with Mike,â I say.
I follow her inside and she trudges down the hall to Mikeâs bedroom door. From behind, she looks like someone headed for the doghouse.
It takes several minutes for Johnson to come out, walking slowly, with a cane. âWhat is it?â he says, without preamble.
âCan we go somewhere private?â
He glares at me, but says, âWe can go in the kitchen.â I donât know why he would be annoyed with me, but people have strange reactions when theyâre the victim of a violent crime.
